Self taught artist, Madhvi Parekh was born in Sanjaya, a
village in
Gujarat. She started painting in 1964, inspired
by the rich folk traditions of picture making in
Gujarat. Over the years she grew out of the constraints of the folk
conventions, yet sticking to the flat surface and the pictorial
significance of the decorative elements. She has participated in many solo
and important group shows notably Watercolours by Four Women Artists,
Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal and Jehangir Art Gallery in 1987.
The Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India,
sponsored a documentary film on Madhvi and her artist husband Manu Parekh.
She has held a number of shows abroad including Al-Khaleeja in Kuwait,
Play in Turkey and Yogoslavia in 1985, A Critical Difference,:
show of 9 Indian Artist at Camden Art Centre, London in 1993 and Gallery
Foundation for Indian Artists, Amsterdam in 1997.
