Madhavi Parekh

Up

Self taught artist, Madhvi Parekh was born in Sanjaya, a village in Gujarat. She started painting in 1964, inspired by the rich folk traditions of picture making in Gujarat. Over the years she grew out of the constraints of the folk conventions, yet sticking to the flat surface and the pictorial significance of the decorative elements. She has participated in many solo and important group shows notably Watercolours by Four Women Artists, Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal and Jehangir Art Gallery in 1987.

The Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, sponsored a documentary film on Madhvi and her artist husband Manu Parekh. She has held a number of shows abroad including Al-Khaleeja in Kuwait, Play in Turkey and Yogoslavia in 1985, A Critical Difference,: show of 9 Indian Artist at Camden Art Centre, London in 1993 and Gallery Foundation for Indian Artists, Amsterdam in 1997.

Madhvi lives and works in New Delhi
