Atul Bhalla Indian, b. 1964
Born in 1964, Atul Bhalla completed his bachelor’s in fine arts from the College of Art, University of Delhi, and his master’s in fine arts from the School of Art, Northern Illinois University, USA. He is presently a professor of visual art at Shiv Nadar University in India.
Bhalla has had several solo shows, including at Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi (2018, 2015, 2011); Art Museum, USA (2016, 2011); the Accademia Filarmonica Romana, Rome (2016); SepiaEYE, New York (2015); Grossman Gallery, Lafayette College, Philadelphia (2011); Project 88, Mumbai (2009); and Aicon Gallery, London (2008). He has also participated in various group shows, including the Harvard Radcliffe Institute, USA (2023); CSMVS Museum, Mumbai (2023); the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art (2022–23); Vadehra Art Gallery (2023, 2020); Seattle Art Museum, USA (2022); South South, Johannesburg, South Africa (2022); the Chennai Photo Biennale (2019); Fotofest Biennale, Houston, Texas (2018, 2016); Bhau Daji Lad Museum, Mumbai (2018, 2017); RIMT Melbourne, Australia (2017); Benton Museum of Art, University of Connecticut, USA (2017); the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi (2016); Sunaparanta Centre for the Arts, Goa (2015); the Museo MADRE, Naples (2014); and Sharjah Art Museum (2014), to name a few.
Bhalla has also extensively participated in projects and residencies across the world, more recently at the Harvard Radcliffe Institute, USA (2023); the Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Initiative (2023); World Weather Network + Khoj International Artist Association (2022–23); Heidelberg University, Germany (2019); Haverford College, USA (2019); and Brown University, USA (2018). He was an artist-in-residence at Cornell University, USA, in 2020, and an Artistic Research Africa Mellon Fellow in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2018. His notable public projects include installations at the Chamber of Mines, University of Witwatersrand (WITS), South Africa (2018); the Heritage Transport Museum, National Capital Region, New Delhi (2013) and site-specific installations on the River Elbe in Hamburg and at the River Yamuna in Delhi (2011), among others.
His work is included in many important collections, including the Smithsonian Museum for Asian Art Collection, Washington DC, USA; Harvard Art Museum. Cambridge, USA; Devi Art Foundation. Gurgaon, India; Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan; Kiran Nadar Museum of Art. New Delhi, India; and the Spencer Museum of Art, University of Kansas, USA.
The artist lives and works in New Delhi, India.
