Born in Santiniketan,
Chameli Ramachandran obtained her Diploma in Fine Arts and Crafts and
Master’s degree in Ancient Indian History and Culture from Visva Bharati
University, Santiniketan. Of Chinese origin, Chameli was incidentally
named by the great Rabindranath Tagore himself.
She has the ability to
imbibe and observe small natural phenomena and transmute them in her
imagination into experiences of poetic intensity. The minute details in
her renderings epitomizes the essential truth in the state of ‘being’ .The
paintings of Chameli Ramachandran are kindled by such fleeting moments in
life where the ephemeral becomes the eternal. She has collaborated with
her husband, fellow artist A. Ramachandran on a number of projects,
especially writing and illustrating children’s pictures books published in
India, Japan and England. Chameli Ramachandran has held three exclusive
shows of paintings including one with Paramjit Singh in Delhi and her most
recent show with Vadehra Art Gallery in 2005. She has also participated in
a number of group shows such as Delhi for Delhi by People for
Animal, Gift for India by Sahmat , Special Millennium Show
by Art Today, Lok Rag by Art Pilgrim, Landscapes and
Contemporary Indian Painting by Art Motif and A Celebration of
Colour by
