Between February 7 - March 2, 2006, the first-ever Pablo Picasso
exhibition in a private gallery in India received an unprecedented
response from art collectors, general public and the press.
The 40 works on
display, which included drawings, etchings, lithographs, linocuts, ceramic
plates, aquatints and a couple of round dish prints, covered major art
movements of the 20th century – facets like Cubism which
Picasso founded and Surrealism which he flirted with.
As Conor Macklin of Grosvenor Gallery rightly pointed out in a press
interview (Ashoke Nag, ET, February 8th, 2006), “Just like
Souza, Tyeb Mehta, Gaitonde and Husain enjoy international reach and
demand, Picasso has a place in India. The idea is to test the waters in
India which is now on par with the overseas markets. We are staging an
exhibit in Delhi just like it would be staged in Los Angeles or Tokyo.
India can become a destination for the international art world."
After this successful collaboration, we have set up Grosvenor Vadehra
Gallery in London in October 2006.
