Review of Gulammohammed Sheikh at Kiran Nadar Museum of Art

by Meera Menezes | Artforum
“Living in India means living simultaneously in several cultures and times,” opined painter, poet, and pedagogue Gulammohammed Sheikh several decades ago, adding, “The past exists as a living entity alongside the present, each illuminating and sustaining the other.” So the octogenarian’s aptly titled retrospective “Of Worlds Within Worlds” was a palimpsest of ages and cultures. Curated by Roobina Karode, the show traced Sheikh’s artistic trajectory, spanning six decades and encompassing more than 190 artworks in an astounding array of media, including paintings, drawings, photographs, digital collages, ceramic sculptures, and installations.
