Rina Banerjee b. 1963

Biography

Born in 1963 in Kolkata, Indian-American artist Rina Banerjee received her master’s degree in painting and printmaking from the Yale School of Art, New Haven, Connecticut, in 1995.

 

Through her distinctive use of materials and imagery, Banerjee explores questions of femininity, migration, commerce, climate change, and identity within an increasingly globalised world. Her sculptural installations weave together cultural artifacts, textiles, domestic objects, mythic references, and the lingering material traces of colonial histories, creating layered and associative environments.

 

Banerjee recently had a travelling retrospective Make Me A Summary of the World presented at the Frist Art Museum, Nashville (2020), the Fowler Museum of African and Asian Art at UCLA, Los Angeles (2019), the San José Museum of Art, San José (2018), and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia (2018). She held a survey exhibition at the Musée Guimet in Paris (2011), and has participated in the 55th and 57th Venice Biennale (2013, 2017); and the Whitney Biennial (2000). She has also been included in group exhibitions at several institutions, including Dialogue: Rina Banerjee And Zai Kuning, Ota Fine Arts, Singapore (2021); 100 Drawings, Drawing Center, New York (2020); Florence and Daniel Guerlain Donation, Centre Pompidou, Paris (2013); Crossings: Time Unfolded-II, Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi (2012); Facets of the Figure, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2011); 5x5 Contemporary Artist on Contemporary Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2003); among others.

 

She is included in several private and public collections, including Fondation Louis Vuitton pour l'Art Contemporain, Paris; the San Jose Art Museum, San Jose; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; New York Public Library, New York; Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, University of California, Berkeley; Devi Art Foundation, Gurgaon; Boghossian Foundation, Brussels and the Queens Museum, New York.
