Art Basel Miami Beach 2025: A Creative Uprising

Our presentation, titled A Creative Uprising, explores the many forms the forces of resistance take on in the Indian Subcontinent, where cultural and religious traditions were once grounding and enriching but now dissenting interpretations of what South Asian modernity means manifests in measures of control and coagulation rather than celebrating the in-born diversity of the region. Our selected artists beset their oeuvres in discourse around the contemporary realities of identity and experience following those most impacted by such philosophical groundlessness. The exhibit will include painting, photography, sculpture and installation across scales of significance.
From the politically and environmentally overwhelmed annals of the workers’ Mumbai, the intimate habituations of South Asian immigrants in America and the historic sites of Delhi re-claimed by a queer quotidian Mumbai – to the oral libraries of a public imagination containing stories of controlled movement and passage for women existing in patriarchal societies, the arbitrary manipulations of cartographical mapping as well as the immensity of philosophical concerns that surround questions of being and belonging – these artists challenge the ineffectuality of defunct traditions, speaking truth to power by renewing the complexity of the ‘source’ to include marginal narratives and identities around which they center the human condition. In so doing, their work tempers traditions with transcendence, championing critical perspectives and granting witness to progressive ideals of a global persuasion.
