Overview
Baronet House, Ahmedabad

Homes are bodies, their residents their consciousness. If walls have ears, the floors speak of passage in footprints and dust, while the windows offer a transient respite from the   interiority a modern life knows all too well. In The Poetics of Space (1958), French philosopher Gaston Bachelard argues that a house exists beyond the blueprint of physical materials that compose it; rather, a house is a psychological map of the human soul, more corporeal vessel than constituent structure, carrying and circulating memory and imagination long after the building has settled. Among the in-laid carvings and porcelain urns of family homes, generational stories abound. A silk-woven carpet collected on a grandfather’s first visit out of the country sits near a mother’s silver jewellery box embedded with semi-precious stones, given to her by her own mother. Both might find their way into a child’s new home, among their curved stone mantles and beige couches. The objects in our possession travel as people do, far and wide, across time and structures, forming invisible connections between places that architecture alone cannot account for.

Our presentation House of Memories contemplates the house as self, through the works of a select group of South Asian artists from our programme that move beyond realist representations of figure, landscape and culture, foraying deeper into the emotional, psychosocial theatre of human existence where fragmentation and loss, inheritance and displacement, and nostalgia and ephemerality emerge as enduring conditions of individual or collective belonging. The curation spans painting, drawing and photography, conceptualized in a salon-style presentation that echoes the gradual and thoughtful accumulation of inherited objects and lived experience.
