ART IN REVIEW; Sunil Gupta -- 'From Here to Eternity'

By Holland Cotter | The New York Times

Sunil Gupta, who was born in New Delhi and lives in London, has participated in two important New York museum group shows, ''Out of India'' at the Queens Museum and ''Transforming the Crown: African, Asian and Caribbean Artists in Britain, 1966-1996,'' organized by the Caribbean Cultural Center. This is his first solo show here, and it's a strong one.

It gathers excerpts from three series of photographs. The earliest, ''Exiles,'' begun in 1987, looks at the life of gay men in India, where homosexual activity is still prohibited by legal statutes left over from colonial rule. In Mr. Gupta's photo-and-text pieces, single men and couples gather at bleak-looking cruising spots in public parks or around historic monuments. In most of the pictures the men have their faces turned away from the camera.
