There is a stark sense of directness in the works of Faiza Butt, which are on display at Vadehra Art Gallery. In one of the works called Zevar Zanjeer, elegant Urdu and English words of Aaj Bazar Mein by Faiz Ahmed Faiz float around on a lightbox.

The images could hint at Butt's origin — the artist who is now based in London, grew up in Lahore. Yet the works, full of issues of culture, gender and religion, transcend all cultural and geographical boundaries. Aptly titling her solo exhibition "Aalmi", which means universal, Butt brings 25 works to India, a promising spectacle of what she calls "humanist art".
