8 new art shows in India we’re excited about this October

He is one of India’s biggest painting maestros, known for his vibrant canvases of urban life. But Sudhir Patwardhan’s oeuvre was much more than just that. A new exhibition in the capital takes a close look at his drawings that span almost three decades. Including over 200 drawings, the exhibition curated by art historian R. Siva Kumar delves into lesser-known etchings by Patwardhan that offer a glimpse of slice-of-life images of the India the artist knew in the ’70s and after. From smaller drawings that give us a peek into his life in the studio to large-scale sketches of people, everyday scenes and objects, this showcase takes us into the mind’s eye of a true icon of Indian art.
