Held By The Land: D-40 Defence Colony, New Delhi

18 December 2023 - 19 January 2024
Landscape as a subject has undergone a profound transformation over the decades, with our apprehension of the natural world being informed by prevailing historical and cultural contexts, as can be traced through various art historical milestones. In the post-war era landscapes were often depicted as idyllic scenes with a penchant towards realism, while the environmental awakening of the late 20th century ushered in confrontations with ecological concerns that pushed artists to portray landscapes as ecosystems in need of preservation.

In India, too, artists have consistently conveyed a deepened awareness of the delicate balance between humanity and nature. From the majestic peaks of the Himalayas to the sun-kissed beaches of Goa, from the arid deserts of Rajasthan to the lush greenery of Kerala, the Indian subcontinent is a kaleidoscope of landscapes that have served as a wellspring of inspiration for both modern and contemporary artists seeking to capture the diverse essences of their homeland.

Held by the Land presents interpretations on landscapes with works from the 1940s to 2023, contemplating the ever-changing dialogue in our understanding of nature. From romanticized visions that flourish with self-sufficiency and divinity, to realistic portrayals that undertake the task of documenting human intervention in natural spaces, to surrealist and abstract forms that inquire into the latent powers of the world as it is – the exhibition explores the delicacy of nature and its enduring significance, highlighting the importance the intricacies of the natural world hold in an artist’s imagination.
